Hey Gregor - I saw these posted a while back and am compelled to share some fan-geek Wilco info -
1. ‘Gone’ I believe is actually a cover song, Wilco released in in ‘95 as ‘I Am Not Willing’ — it was a (UK?) CD B-side to Box Full of Letters. It’s also been covered, in her own inimitable style, by Cat Power (as ‘Never Doubting’ … ? — heck, I always doubt the majority of song titles I see on the Internet…)
2. The demo version of ‘Passenger Side’ was the first of A.M.’s songs I saw released, a scant four months after Uncle Tupelo’s last gig - it was included on a Trademark of Quality (TMOQ) promo sampler distributed by Warner at CMJ Music Marathon in NYC right around Labor Day 1994, where I obtained it.
(now it can be told!) I’ve always loved that version; never knew who exactly played on it but I’m guessing Brian, maybe, and probably Max on fiddle — remember him, the original multipurpose guy in Wilco? — went on to play in the Gourds, etc.
If you have any session details or best guesses please share here.
